401(k) census validation tool.
Run a synthetic or de-identified employee census through a simple validation screen. The tool checks required columns, flags rows that fail your age and hours thresholds or have missing values, and lets you download an exception report. The file is processed in your browser tab and is not uploaded anywhere.
Illustrative estimates only. Results do not determine eligibility, legal compliance, tax treatment or required corrective action.
Run a census through the engine
Upload a synthetic or de-identified CSV to demonstrate intake, validation, basic rule screening, and exception reporting. Processing stays in this browser tab; files are not sent to a server.
Supported headers include employee_id, compensation, age, hours, deferral_pct, employer_contribution, hire_date. Do not upload Social Security numbers, names, addresses, account numbers, or other sensitive personal data. Use “Clear census data” when you finish to remove the displayed results and in-memory demo data.

“Pass simple screen” means required fields are present and the entered age/hours thresholds are met. It is not a plan eligibility determination or nondiscrimination test. Actual eligibility depends on plan terms, service periods, long-term part-time rules, entry dates, exclusions and other facts.
The math behind the result
Required columns
employee_id, compensation, age and hours. Optional columns include deferral_pct, employer_contribution and hire_date.
Simple screen
A row passes when required values are present and the entered age and annual hours thresholds are met.
Exception report
Rows that need review are listed with validation notes and can be downloaded as a CSV.
Good uses
- Cleaning a census before annual testing starts
- Showing a sponsor which records need follow-up
- Testing how a validation step fits into your intake workflow
What it does not do
- Use synthetic or de-identified data only; never upload Social Security numbers, names or account numbers
- Passing the screen is not a plan eligibility determination or a nondiscrimination test
- Plan terms, service periods, long-term part-time rules and exclusions are not modeled
Frequently asked questions
Is my census file uploaded?
No. The CSV is read and processed inside your browser tab. Use the clear button when you finish to remove the results and in-memory data.
Which column headers does it accept?
employee_id, compensation, age and hours are required. deferral_pct, employer_contribution and hire_date are supported. You can download a CSV template from the tool.
Why validate a census before testing?
Missing compensation, wrong hours or misclassified employees are among the most common causes of incorrect test results and late corrections. Catching them at intake is cheaper than fixing them after testing.
